Abul-Gheit: The Arab-Chinese summit in Riyadh is historic and gives weight to relations

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary General of the League of Arab States, affirmed that the Riyadh Arab-Chinese summit is historic and gives great weight to relations.

Abul-Gheit added that the Arab-Chinese Summit for Cooperation and Development reflects the political will of the Arab and Chinese sides to raise these relations at this leadership level.

The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, in statements to the Saudi Press Agency, expressed his wishes for the continuation of the summits periodically in order to maintain the momentum of these relations.

He pointed out that “the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and the holding of the Riyadh-Chinese Summit for Cooperation and Development, is a historic event by all standards and reflects the weight of the Arab region in the international economic system.”

He added that the summit “represents a common realization by China and the Arab countries of the requirements of the current moment, which is witnessing successive and prolonged global crises, which necessitates building bridges of communication and joint action to find effective initiatives to deal with the reality of crises and mitigate their effects on peoples.”

As well as “employing the capabilities available to both parties, the Arab and the Chinese, to achieve the desired prosperity.”

And he indicated that “convening the summit comes within the framework of the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum, where the two sides agreed during the ninth session of the ministerial meeting of the Arab Cooperation Forum in 2020 to hold an Arab-Chinese summit in order to push the Arab-Chinese strategic partnership to broader horizons, and in a way that serves the common interest of both sides.”

He noted that “there was a great welcome to Saudi Arabia’s hosting of this summit, the first of its kind, given the important political and economic weight it represents in the region and the world.”

He expressed optimism about “the convening of the summit and confidence in its success in achieving a quantum leap in relations between the Arab and Chinese sides.”

Aboul Gheit pointed out that “the relations between Arab countries and China go back to a very long history.”

He continued, “We do not forget that the Silk Road was the path through which civilization moved from east to west through the Islamic world and China in the Middle Ages.”

He pointed out that “many of the scientific, technological and knowledge achievements that made the European renaissance since the fifteenth century have origins dating back to the exchange that took place on this road, and China is talking today about a new revival of this civilizational path that contributed to changing the world before through the Belt and Road Initiative.” .

He pointed out, “There are distinguished relations at the bilateral level that bring together China and almost all Arab countries, but the most important development was the establishment of the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum in September 2004 in Cairo, as a framework for dialogue and collective Arab-Chinese cooperation, including cooperation in the political, social, economic and international affairs fields.”

He explained that since the establishment of the forum, Arab-Chinese cooperation has witnessed a great boom, and there have been more than 20 mechanisms for cooperation in various political, economic, cultural, media and development fields, including meetings of foreign ministers, senior officials, strategic political dialogue, and businessmen conferences.
