Iraq thwarts the smuggling of 100 artifacts dating back to the Abbasid era

The Iraqi Intelligence Service, in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior, thwarted the smuggling of 100 artifacts dating back to ancient eras.

A statement by the Iraqi Intelligence Service stated, “The Iraqi National Intelligence Service, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, carried out a qualitative operation during which it managed to thwart an attempt to smuggle 100 artifacts dating back to the Abbasid era.”

The statement stated that the operation resulted in “the arrest of 5 persons accused of flagrante delicto.”

Over the past years, Iraq has succeeded in recovering more than 18,000 artifacts that were stolen from Iraq during the events that accompanied the US forces’ occupation of Iraq in 2003 and its aftermath.
